Scrimshaw Workshop with Billy Griner September 16-18, 2022

3 day workshop - beginners welcome!  $525 class fee includes onsite meals and lodging. There will be an additional $25 materials fee . 

In this introductory class, students will learn methods of scrimshaw including pattern development and transfer, cutting and shading, and the proper use and application of tools. 


Students will work on a round horn surface as a practice medium rather than scrimshawing a finished horn item.

​About the instructor - Billy Griner has been a making 18th and 19th century powder horns for about 30 years. He is a maker of both historic reproductions and contemporary powder horns.  A native southerner, Billy specializes in Southern Banded horns in the styles that were commonly found in the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee and his native Georgia.  Billy’s engraved horns are traditionally carved horns that are engraved in his own contemporary folk art style.  His southern and contemporary engraved horns have won numerous ribbons at The Gunmakers Fair at Dixons.   
 Billy makes his home on the Georgia coast at Woodbine, GA.  His family settled in Coastal Georgia in the 1730’s and has remained rooted in  Georgia to date.  The majority of his work is done in his back yard studio set up specifically for lathe turned/ hand carved horn work.  Billy is a former Guild Master of the Honourable Company of Horners.
