Prehistoric Pottery Workshop with Keith Grenoble

May 21-23, 2021

3 day workshop. $525 class fee includes meals and lodging. Learn how to make, decorate and fire pots plus much more !

" Clay is a common soil type found within just a few miles of anywhere.  In this class we will learn to assess clay soils, and then modify them as needed for making and firing pots using the same methods our ancestors did thousands of years ago.

FRIDAY : We will focus on the making of bowls and other objects in the rough. You will learn various modeling techniques to create your own  vessel. Be prepared to sit on the ground and get your hands and maybe even your feet very dirty! - If sitting on the ground is not comfortable for you, please bring a chair or stool and a board that will fit on/ across your lap. A folding tray table is also a possibility, with a board or trash bag if you don' t want it covered with clay!

SATURDAY :  We will spend time refining and decorating our work. In the evening we will shift our focus to fire building skills.  We will discuss the best types of wood to use and identifying it , along with the philosophies and best techniques for building a kiln the way our ancestors did. As evening settles in, we stack the kilns and let er rip!  Smores will be welcome at a side fire, so bring ingredients!  Musical instruments, storytelling and other talents are welcome!

SUNDAY :  Like Christmas Morning you ll find Keith sneaking a peek at the pots and sharing the tales of temperature gradients.  After he leads the class on a  short walk around looking for signs of clay and where to find it, we will unpack the kilns and talk about how to use and care for your cookware. About the instructor - Keith Grenoble has been a product of the Back to the Land movement and the close ties to Native communities from an early age. Knowing that our ancestors made their living from the land, Keith started making stone tools represented in the rich archaeological record of Tidewater, Virginia. He has been teaching earthskills since 1987. Keith is passionate about making simulations of prehistoric cookpots, but still catches a knap here and there.
