In 2018, The Kentucky Rifle Foundation graciously made available a scholarship to the Gunmaker's Workshop as an effort to promote and encourage the art and craft of longrifle building among interested young people . The scholarship covers the full cost ($1075) of tuition, room and board - plus an additional $500 is awarded to the recipient to go toward needed supplies such as gun parts, tools or materials that may be needed to complete their project.
For 2019 the KRF has announced that it will once again be offering this scholarship. The recipient must be an individual between the ages of 18 and 30 who has an intense interest and desire to get involved or further their skills in the building of the Kentucky Rifle. Applicants are required to submit an essay which serves as an entry. This essay can include descriptions what the applicant might expect to gain from attending the class, along with any prior gun building or related experiences such as work in other 18th century crafts, living history / reenactment, hunting with or shooting traditional muzzleloading guns, plus any other information which the applicant feels is relevant.
The scholarship is offered both to beginners an those with experience. Skills such as wood or metal working or blacksmithing are worth describing in the essay but are not a requirement . Some hand tools will be needed - a tool list will be made available on request. The essays must be received by November 1st, 2018 via email or USPS . Shortly after this time we will choose one winner then contact the recipient and notify all other applicants.
